Disuntik Gen Manusia, Tikus-tikus ini Jadi Pintar

Dalam film-film fiksi ilmiah (sci-fi) kadangkala menggambarkan hewan cerdas hasil eksperimen dengan mengubah komposisi gen mereka. Di dunia nyata, perkembangan ke arah tersebut dimungkinkan. 

Massachusetts Institute of Technology melakukan eksperiman dengan menggabungkan gen manusia - FOXP2 - dan menyusun ulang pada susunan gen tikus, menghasilkan tikus yang belajar cara menemukan makanan lebih cepat dibanding tikus normal.



Eksperiman semacam ini juga pernah dilakukan tahun 2009. Ditemukan, FOXP2 dari manusia mengembangkan neuron yang lebih kompleks, sekaligus membentuk sirkuit otak yang lebih efisien.

"Tidak ada yang tahu bagaimana otak membuat transisi tersebut, dari berpikir secara sadar untuk melakukannya secara tidak sadar," kata Ann Graybiel, penulis laporan di Massachusetts Institute of Technology, seperti dilansir ABC Science.

Dari temuan itu, Graybiel dan tim melakukan eksperimen ulang menggunakan ratusan tikus yang terbagi dalam dua kelompok. Grup pertama hasil rekayasa genetika, dan grup kedua tikus normal.

Semua tikus tersebut ditempatkan pada labirin yang kompleks. Tujuan akhir menemukan makanan, yakni sepotong cokelat. Pada beberapa bagian tikungan di labirin, ditempatkan beberapa tanda seperti "T" untuk persimpangan, "belok ke arah kursi". Jadi setiap tikus punya pilihan, memperhatikan tanda atau merasakan tekstur lantai labirin - halus atau kasar.

Hasilnya, tikus yang sudah mendapat rekayasa gen manusia bisa menemukan cokelat dalam 7 hari. Sementara tikus normal menghabiskan waktu hingga 11 hari.

Anenya, ketika tanda-tanda pada labirin dihapus sehingga tetikus itu hanya bisa menebak dari tekstur lantai, tikus hasil rekayasa dan tikus normal menemukan cokelat pada waktu bersamaan.

Berdasar eksperimen itu, Graybiel menyusun hipotesa, bahwa gen manusia tidak meningkatkan kemampuan kognitif yang fleksibel. Namun gen manusia membuat otak tikus berpikir secara sekuen, yang disebut pembelajaran deklaratif. Contohnya seperti kita, manusia belajar mengingat secara sadar tanda-tanda lalu lintas secara otomatis bila berulang melewati jalan yang sama.

Penelitian yang tertuang dalam jurnal "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari kemampuan bayi yang belajar bahasa secara otomatis, dengan menirukan secara sadar kata-kata yang mereka dengar.

Amigdalin, Zat Pada Biji Apel yang Cukup Berbahaya

Sebagian ahli gizi menyarankan agar apel dimakan bersama dengan kulitnya. Hal ini karena kulit apel mengandung serat yang bermanfaat bagi tubuh. Kendati begitu ada bagian dari buah apel yang sebaiknya tidak anda makan, yakni bijinya.

Biji apel memiliki kandungan zat amigdalin. Zat ini dapat dikonversi menjadi hidrogen sianida yang beracun. Akan tetapi, kalau hanya dikonsumsi dalam jumlah kecil maka efek toksin dari biji apel tersebut juga sangat kecil.

Hindari Mengunyah Biji Apel

Selain apel, ada beberapa buah lainnya yang juga mengandung amigdalin, diantaranya adalah plum, persik, quince, dan almond.

Kadar amigdalin yang ada di dalam buah apel termasuk kecil, terlebih lagi zat tersebut baru keluar jika bijinya dikunyah dengan baik.

Amigdalin merupakan toksin glikosida yang apabila dikombinasikan dengan enzim pencernaan akan menghasilkan hidrogen sianida, racun yang setara dengan Cylon B. Racun tersebut juga digunakan pada pembunuhan massal di kamp konsentrasi ketika perang dunia II berlangsung.

Walaupun demikian, buah atau biji buah yang memiliki kandungan amigdalin dapat diproses untuk menyingkirkan zat beracunnya, misalnya adalah singkong.

Singkong mengandung cyanogen yang sangat tinggi, namun zat tersebut dapat diolah menjadi tepung tapioka. Proses pemasakan singkong dapat membuat cyanogen menjadi tidak berbahaya. Begitu juga dengan kacang almond, yang juga dapat dihilangkan dengan proses yang hampir sama.

Amigdalin yang telah diubah menjadi hidrogen sianida dapat menjadi berbahaya karena zat tersebut akan mengurangi kinerja sel darah merah dalam membawa oksigen. Walaupun dalam jumlah kecil tubuh dapat membuang hidrogen sianida, namun apabila jumlahnya besar, maka bisa berakibat fatal.

Orang yang keracunan hidrogen sianida berisiko mengalami sakit kepala, jantung berdebar dengan cepat, muntah, mual, lemas, dan gemetar. Hal ini bahkan bisa menjadi serius apabila hidrogen sianida datang dalam jumlah yang besar, bisa menyebabkan koma, sesak napas, kerusakan paru, tekanan darah rendah, dan bahkan kematian.

Kembali lagi ke masalah apel, anda tidak perlu risau tentang zat amigdalin yang terkandung di dalam bijinya. Apabila anda tidak sengaja memakan biji apel, maka hal tersebut tidak akan membuat anda keracunan.

Namun, sebaiknya anda sebisa mungkin menghindari mengunyah biji apel. Agar lebih aman, potonglah buah apel menjadi beberapa bagian, kemudian buang bijinya, dan setelah itu makan buahnya.

Hal ini juga berlaku apabila anda ingin memblender apel untuk dibuat jus atau selai, jangan lupa untuk membuang bijinya terlebih dulu.

Researchers Want You to Change Your Car for A Mini-Helicopter

Six institutions funded by the European Union are exploring the idea of small commuter helicopters to tackle city traffic.

Swarms of flying cars hovering over cities has been a persistent image in sci-fi. We’ve seen them in TV shows like Hanna-Barbera’s The Jetsons and movies such as Blade Runner and The Fifth Element. But the truth is few people have taken them seriously as a solution for everyday transportation. Until now.
myCopter is a European government project that is studying the technical feasibility of small commuter helicopters. The main challenge is figuring out how to make personal choppers easy to fly for ordinary people. Scientists at the University of Liverpool have experimented with prototype flight simulators, testing MyCopter’s systems with people with no flying experience.
Danny Hackim, a journalist for The New York Times, was recently offered a test drive on the simulator and this is what he said: “I don’t know how to fly and I’m not even a very enthusiastic driver, but I took off easily enough from what looked like a field surrounded by six houses in the English countryside. Then I followed a virtual aerial highway stretching out before me by flying through a series of purple squares spread across the simulated skyline.”
myCopter was conceived in 2007 by Heinrich H. Bülthoff from the Max Planck Institute, in Germany, after the European Union asked researchers for ideas that could inspire radical changes in current transportation systems. The rationale behind the project is pretty simple, as Mark D. White, the flight simulator laboratory manager, told The New York Times: “You have so many man-hours lost sitting in traffic jams, and you have a lot of space above us… Can you travel from your home to your city-center work location without getting stopped in traffic jams?”.
The next phase of this project, which will likely begin next year if it gets sufficient funding, is collaborating with companies to generate potential designs. There are other challenges that need sorting out, such as determining how pilots will avoid crashing into each other and what type of physical infrastructure might be needed before we have thousands of personal helicopters flying over us.
There is still a long way to go before myCopter becomes a reality, but a Jetsons-like city might be a reality in the not so distant future.

Laboratorium Amerika Kembangkan 324 Senjata Biologis

Amerika telah mengembangkan sebanyak 324 Bio-Laboratorium, mengapa hal ini bisa terjadi? Tentu saja bisa. Karena sejak puluhan tahun lalu, hingga pemerintahan Presiden Obama bahkan sampai detik ini tetap bersikukuh menolak adanya protokol pemeriksaan yang terkandung dalam Konvensi tentang pelarangan pembuatan dan penyimpanan senjata biologis dan toksin.

Di tengah-tengah optimisme dunia terhadap Presiden Barrack Obama yang akan melucuti kebijakan militerisasi politik luar negeri Amerika ke seluruh dunia, muncul informasi yang cukup mencemaskan beberapa kalangan yang berwenang di bidang politik luar negeri dan pertahanan.

Menurut informasi yang berhasil diperoleh tim riset Global Future Institute dari sebuah sumber di Departemen Luar Negeri, Amerika saat ini sedang melakukan penelitian secara intensif dalam bidang Mikro-organisme, Patogen tinggi dan virus-virus berbahaya.

Alhasil, sampai sekarang komunitas internasional sama sekali tidak memiliki mekanisme kontrol atau pengawasan yang efektif mengenai adanya komponen-komponen yang berpotensi untuk dijadikan persenjataan biologis dan toksin yang dimiliki Amerika seperti bio-gen.


Bahkan berbagai elemen masyarakat (civil society) yang bermaksud untuk melakukan investigasi mengenai keberadaan dan peran bio-laboratorium, tidak memiliki kewenangan dan legalitas untuk mendesak diadakannya penyelidikan mengenai transparansi peran dan pengelolaan berbagai bio-laboratorium yang ada di Amerika, seperti di Los Alamos.

Yang terjadi justru kebalikannya. Dalam tahun-tahun terakhir ini berbagai program penelitian dalam bidang biologi mendapat banyak dana dari Pemerintah. Menurut informasi sumber Departemen Luar Negeri kepada Global Future Institute, Amerika berencana akan membangun 20 laboratorium baru high-level biosecurity, dan 2 laboratorium yang secara khusus untuk meneliti bio-gen yang masuk kategori berbahaya dan paling menular.

Bukan itu saja. Amerika kabarnya juga akan melakukan modernisasi obyek-obyek penelitian mengenai senjata biologis. Dan sarana untuk proyek ini, Amerika sudah menyiapkan sebuah blok khusus di kompleks laboratorium nuklir di Los Alamos dan Livermors.

Bahkan di lokasi ini, akan dilaksanakan sebuah penelitian mengenai bisul Siberian (malignant antrax), penyakit pes, dan botulisme.


Lemahnya Sistem Pengamanan

Sumber Global Future Institute juga menginfromasikan bahwa bulan Mei 2014 lalu Defense Science Board yang berada dalam kewenangan Menteri Pertahanan Amerika Serikat, telah mengadakan pemeriksaan tingkat keamanan bio-laboratorium Amerika baik yang dikelola militer maupun sipil.
Ternyata ada temuan yang cukup mengejutkan. Bahan-bahan yang disimpan dalam bio-laboratorium dilaporkan banyak yang hilang.

Inilah yang terjadi di salah satu bio-laboratorium bernama United States Army Medical Science and Research Institute of Infectious Desease (USAMRIID). Ketika diperiksa, ternyata ada banyak sekali bio-gen yang hilang dari penyimpangan di bio-laboratorium tersebut.

Ini bisa terjadi karena lemahnya sistem perhitungan dan pengawasan atas penyimpanan biogen berbahaya tersebut.

Lembaga ini tercatat sebagai tempat penyimpanan biopatogen terbesar di Amerika, dan tempat untuk melakukan proyek genetic engineering penyakit berbahaya.

Akibat temuan tersebut, pada Februari 2014 lalu laboratorium yang masuk kategori security tingkat-4 (tertinggi) tersebut akhirnya ditutup karena dinilai ada banyak kelemahan dalam sistem perhitungan dan kontrol atas biogen.

Tentu saja hasil temuan ini selain tidak menggembirakan, juga cukup mengundang kecemasan masyarakat dunia internasional.
Bayangkan saja, di refrigator bio-laboratorium ini ternyata ditemukan lebih dari 9200 patogen yang tidak terdaftar dalam database tertentu!

Jumlah patogen yang tidak terdafter di base tersebut tentu saja bukan jumlah yang sedikit, mengingat jumlah total patogen sekitar 66000 specimen.

Lebih parah dari itu, rapuhnya mekanisme pengaman di jaringan komputer kerja institutte tersebut, pada perkembangannya bisa dipenetrasi atau dimasuki oleh kelompok terorirs, atau orang-orang yang berniat untuk melakukan suatu operasi khusus bermodus teror.

Dengan begitu, lemahnya sistem pengamanan, dengan mudah pemerintah Amerika akan berdalih bahwa kelompok terorirs telah berhasil menembus pengamanan bio-laboratorium tersebut, dan menyebarkan virus berbahaya tersebut baik di wilayah Amerika maupun di Luar Negeri.

Pertanyaan yang penting dikemukakan di sini adalah, apakah ini memang murni lemahnya sistem pengamanan di bio-laboratorium itu, atau memang didasari kesengajaan alias kebijakan diam-diam pemerintahan Washington agar bebas dari tanggung jawab ketika pada perkembangannya virus berbahaya dan menular tersebut menyebar di wilayah Amerika maupun ke seluruh dunia.

Indikasinya memang cukup mencurigakan. Karena lemahnya sistem pengamanan bio-laboratorium justru kebanyakan terjadi di beberapa obyek-obyek militer Amerika. Hal ini tentu saja cukup mengkhawatirkan. Karena ada ribuatn specimen yang tidak terdafter di obyek-obyek militer.

Bahkan menurut laporan Center for Desease Control and Prevention, di Amerika sekarang ini ada sekitar 1400 spesialis yang bekerja di bidang biogen dan toksin di 324 biolaboratorium, baik yang dikelola pemerintah maupun swasta.

Karena itu, Global Future Institute mendesak berbagai pihak berwenang di Amerika maupun berbagai kalangan yang berkecimpung dalam bidang bio-laboratorium, untuk secepatkanya mengambil langkah-langkah dalam rangka menjamin keamanan di bio-laboratorium.


Misteri Wabah Kolera di Zimbabwe dan Papua

Dari berbagai riset dan informasi yang berhasil diolah oleh tim Global Futurre Institute, Amerika memang dalam beberapa tahun belakangan ini aktif mengembangkan jenis senjata biologi dan kimia di laboratorium rahasia di Los Alamos, New Mexico. Diduga beragam senjata biologi dan kimia telah diuji cobakan di dunia, baik dalam situasi perang maupun damai.

Pernah dengar Wabah Kolera yang melanda Zimbabwe pada tahun 2008? Wabah kolera Zimbabwe 2008 ini adalah epidemik kolera di Zimbabwe yang mulai terjadi pada Agustus 2008.

Pada Desember 2008, lebih dari 10.000 orang terinfeksi dan wabah telah menyebar ke Botswana dan Afrika Selatan. Pemerintah Zimbabwe menyatakan keadaan darurat dan meminta bantuan dunia internasional.

Wabah yang disebarkan melalui makanan dan minuman yang terkontaminasi bakteri ini menyebar begitu cepat. Sehingga dalam beberapa bulan saja, kolera menjadi epidemi yang menewaskan hampir 3500 warga.

Bahkan World Health Organization (WHO) mencatat wabah kolera di negeri yang dipimpin diktator Robert Mugabe ini, telah menginfeksi 67.945 orang. WHO menggambarkan situasi epidemi kolera di Zimbabwe sebagai ”tidak terkontrol.”

Melihat jumlah korbannya yang lebih dari 60 ribu warga, wajar jika muncul kecurigaan jangan-jangan Amerika dan Inggris memang sengaja menyebar virus ini mengingat dampaknya hampir sama jika kedua negara tersebut menggunakan senjata biologi.


Tujuannya, apa lagi kalau bukan untuk menjatuhkan rezim Robert Mugabe yang memang tidak sejalan dengan haluan politik Amerika dan Inggris. Benar tidaknya memang masih harus dibuktikan.

Namun di Papua, tepatnya di Lembah Kamuu, Distrik Monemani, Kabupaten Paniai, penyakit kolera dan muntaber juga mewabah. Sekitar 200 orang meninggal sejak April 2008.

Mungkinkah ini rekayasa? Dari berbagai temuan, memang ada beberapa kasus wabah kolera dimunculkan dengan memasukkan mayat ke dalam sumur untuk mencemari air.

Dalam kasus lain, berkaitan dengan flu burung misalnya, diduga dimunculkan dengan penyuntikan unggas supaya menularkan virus ke manusia. Keanehan yang muncul adalah, mengapa bisa ke manusia, padahal dalam hitungan detik, virus flu burung akan mati.

H5N1 digunakan sebagai senjata biologi karena bisa menimbulkan kematian pada suatu populasi masyarakat.

Menurut beberapa informasi yang masih perlu dikonfirmasi lebih lanjut, struktur virus H5N1 bisa dibuat sesuai dengan kemauan si perancangnya.

Sebab virus ini terdiri dari delapan segmen yang masing-masing bisa berdiri sendiri. Bisa segmen dari manusia, unggas dan hewan lainnya.

Pada kelompok manusia yang memiliki kemiripan profil DNA, virus tidak harus bermutasi dulu untuk dapat menular. Virus unggas dapat secara cepat mengalami perubahan spesiesifitas reseptor, sehingga menular antar manusia.
Yang pasti, kunci dasar perang biologi adalah menciptakan ketakutan atau teror tentang siapa yang akan terinfeksi.

Lembaga riset Angkatan Laut (Naval Medical Research Unit-2 / NAMRU-2)

Karena itu, Indonesia harus waspada terhadap kemungkinan dijadikan lokasi untuk pengembangan proyek senjata biologis.

Terbukti bahwa Amerika, melalui lembaga riset Angkatan Laut (Naval Medical Research Unit-2/ NAMRU-2), bisa langsung mengambil sampel virus dari korban di Indonesia dengan cara-cara yang tersembunyi.

Sehingga dari berbagai temuan terungkap bahwa data sequencing DNA-H5N1 yang seharusnya disimpan di WHO CC Hongkong, justru disimpan di Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico.
Di tempat rahasia ini pula, data H5N1 hanya boleh diketahui tim kecil yang beranggotakan 15 grup peneliti, di mana WHO hanya menempatkan empat peneliti.

Mulanya Los Alamos dikelola Universitas California. Laboratorium multidisiplin terbesar di dunia ini, 1/3 stafnya adalah fisikawan,1/4 lainnya teknisi, sisanya kimiawan, ilmuwan material, ilmu geografi, dan disiplin lainnya.

Namun seiring waktu, penelitian di Los Alamos lebih terfokus pada kepentingan pertahanan Amerika, utamanya riset mengenai senjata nuklir. Di tempat ini lalu dikembangkan disain senjata nuklir dan pusat riset plutonium.


Los Alamos, Sarang Pembuatan Senjata Biologis?


Sekadar informasi, di Los Alamos ini pula pada masa perang dunia kedua, Amerika merancang bom atom yang akhirnya pada Agustus 1945 dijatuhkan di Hiroshima dan Nagasaki, Jepang.

Di era perang dingin, Pentagon mulai mengembangkan kembali senjata biologi. Untuk itu, di Los Alamos juga, kemudian dibentuk divisi riset biologi molekuler.

Divisi ini berwenang untuk menyelidiki semua virus atau bakteri dengan tingkat penyebaran tinggi. Disebut-sebut virus ebola juga menjadi bahan kajian di laboratorium itu.

Bahkan sebelum virus antrax digunakan dalam bio-teror pada September 2001, ilmuwan Los Alamos sudah melakukan riset kemungkinan penggunaan antrax sebagai senjata biologi.

Divisi yang berwenang mengembangkan vaksin antrax belakangan ini dikenal sebagai BASIS (Biological Aerosol Sentry and Infromation System).

Singkat cerita, Los Alamos disinyalir telah digunakan sebagai tempat paling aman menyimpan dan mengembangkan berbagai macam virus mematikan untuk kepentingan senjata biologis.

Dalam perang Kamboja 1970, ketika Amerika membela kubu anti komunis melawan komunis, Amerika dikabarkan sempat menggunakan senjata biologis dari virus kaki gajah produk Los Alamos.

Lebih gilanya lagi, pada Perang Bosnia 1991-1995, Los Alamos menciptakan virus penghancur tulang mirip bone marrow suppression. Senjata itu kabarnya menewaskan 98 ribu militer dan penduduk sipil.

Karena itu semua, riset biologi di Los Alamos sudah seharusnya berada dalam sistem pengawasan ketat dari masyarakat internasional berupa sebuah lembaga dengan wewenang untuk melakukan pemeriksaan dan pengawasan terhadap penyimpangan secara ilegal virus-virus berbahaya atau bahan-bahan lainnya yang berpotensi untuk bisa digunakan sebagai senjata biologis.

Seperti pernah juga diungkapkan oleh Menteri Kesehatan Siti Fadilah Supari, Jika DNA virus H5N1 hanya dikuasai oleh satu kelompok saja, besar kemungkinan bisa disalahgunakan untuk pembuatan senjata biologi.
Ironisnya, tak hanya di Los Alamos. Setidaknya ada 58 virus asal Indonesia yang disimpan di Bio Health Security (BHS), sebuah lembaga penelitian senjata biologi Pentagon.

Jika benar dugaan virus H5N1 strain Indonesia telah dijadikan senjata biologi, boleh jadi kekuatannya sangatlah luar biasa. Sebab, H5N1 strain Indonesia dikenal sebagai jenis virus paling ganas!

Kabarnya, sampel virus flu burung yang menewaskan satu keluarga di Tanah Karo, Sumatera Utara, Mei 2006, ternyata juga dikirim ke Los Alamos.

Agustutus 2006, Los Alamos ditutup, namun diambil oleh oleh BHS yang berada dalam kendali Departemen Pertahanan Amerika. Dan ternyata, masih tetap melakukan penelitian tentang virus H5N1 sampai sekarang.

Lalu bagaimana mekanisme pengawasan yang sudah berjalan selama ini? Sejumlah negara memang sudah meratifikasi The Convention of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction atau yang lebih dikenal dengan Biological Weapons Convention (WC) pada 19 Februari 1992.

Sayangnya, konvensi BWC ini tidak didukung keberadaan sistem verifikasi untuk mengawasi kepatuhan negara-negara terhadap berbagai ketentuan dalam konvensi.

Beberapa galaksi, intinya memancarkan energi yang besar. Inti yang memancarkan energi ini disebut inti galaksi aktif atau active galactic nuclei (AGN). Saat inti galaksi mengakresi materi di sekitarnya, materi tersebut berputar semakin cepat dan semakin panas, sehingga melepaskan sejumlah cahaya dan energi di kutub-kutubnya. Energi ini disebut jet kosmik.

Quasar merupakan salah satu dari AGN. Quasar merupakan kepanjangan dari Quasi Stellar Radio Source. Disebut radio source karena pada awal ditemukannya, quasar terlihat sangat terang jika diamati dengan menggunakan teleskop radio, sehingga dapat dikatakan quasar memancarkan gelombang radio yang sangat besar. Namun, saat ini diketahui bahwa tidak semua quasar memancarkan gelombang radio, sehingga namanya menjadi Quasi Stellar Object (QSO). Namun, nama quasar tetap sering dipakai.

Semua quasar berada pada jarak yang sangat jauh. Hal ini dapat diketahui melalui pergeseran merahnya (redshift) yang besar, sehingga kecepatan menjauhnya tinggi dan jaraknya semakin jauh. Hal itu didapat dari persamaan v = H x d, dimana v adalah kecepatan menjauh, H adalah konstanta Hubble, dan d adalah jarak objek dari bumi. Dari persamaan tersebut, v sebanding dengan d. Kecepatan gerak menjauh quasar sangat tinggi, mendekati kecepatan cahaya, sehingga jaraknya pun sangat jauh.

Selain quasar, ada yang disebut blazar. Sebenarnya, quasar dan blazar adalah objek dengan ciri yang sama. Perbedaannya hanya pada sudut pandang. Saat dilihat dengan teleskop, quasar terlihat dari sisinya (side-on), sementara blazar terlihat dari mukanya (face-on), sehingga blazar terlihat bundar dari bumi dengan intinya terlihat sebagai jet kosmik yang dipancarkannya sendiri.

Tapi ada yang lebih panjang daripada itu. Ini adalah nama sebuah senyawa yang terdiri dari 189.819 huruf. XD kata terpanjang di dunia ini diawali dengan 'Methio' dan berakhir dengan 'leucine'. Kata ini sebenarnya merupakan nama kimia sebutan bagi jenis protein raksasa yang dalam bahasa awam disebut Titin.

Ada alasan tersendiri mengapa nama protein bisa sangat panjang seperti kata ini. Penamaan protein selama ini dilakukan dengan memadukan nama kimia zat-zat yang membentuk protein tersebut. Mengingat Titin merupakan jenis protein terbesar yang pernah ditemukan, maka nama kimianya tentu tidak singkat.
